New code to restore confidence in building materials post-Grenfell

todaySeptember 22, 2021

Background

A code to ensure transparency over building products aimed at preventing another Grenfell Tower disaster has been launched. The Construction Products Association (CPA) has developed the code based on the principle of clear, accurate, up-to-date and accessible product information.

CPA marketing integrity group chair, Adam Turk, said: “The entirety of the construction industry has contributed to this work over the last three years, through numerous engagements, a call for evidence and an industry consultation.”

The code for construction product information has 11 clauses covering critical aspects from responsibility for product information to transparency regarding performance, proof of stated claims and general information and competency.

The CPA said an independent and robust validation process was being put in place to underpin it.

“It is now time for our Industry to demonstrate its integrity by getting behind the code, and putting building safety first,” said Mr Turk.

Dame Judith Hackitt, chair of the independent review of building regulations and fire safety, said she was pleased to see the sector taking action: “Clear and unambiguous product information is an essential element in rebuilding confidence and trust which was lost after the tragedy of Grenfell Tower.

“Responsible manufacturers can and should now lead the way in doing the right thing and be recognised for doing so.”

Manufacturers urged to get ready for registration

A Preparing for the Code information pack has been published to help manufacturers get ready for verification. Registering for verification will start towards the end of the year with organisations encouraged to register their interest to receive updates ahead of the launch.

“The faster that all manufacturers register their interest and begin the journey, the sooner that users of our information will be able to rely on it to be clear, accurate, up-to-date, accessible and unambiguous,” added Mr Turk.

Brokers Hank Zarihs Associates said a code would give development finance lenders confidence when granting finance to SME builders that the materials they were using for a project were safe.

The Construction Product Information, a newly established not-for-profit organisation, is to manage the published code and its verification.

Chief executive of the organisation, Amanda Long, said: “Enabling responsible manufacturers to assure their product information and be recognised for their efforts, the code will support urgent and positive culture and behaviour change in the industry ahead of regulation.”
